Right click anywhere then you'll see an option called set area something, there's a choice called set base area click it then use left click and drag all over your place, even though the area isn't highlighted it is working then once you're done right click once again, select set area, then click base area and click set.After dragging and selecting an area, it is NOT meant to be just left like that, you should go back to "area selecting" -> base area (or whatever area you chose "select" on last) then you will see 2 new options "set" and "cancel". If it can be helped, destroy the stairs and use sheet ropes to gain access to higher levels.
